  • Gokuri Mission Accomplished!

Another mission accomplished. I’ve found my Grapefruit Gokuri at Wakkanai. Drinking it since 2003.

  • Wakkanai Breakwater – the old end of the line

Years ago the semi arched concrete tunnel of the Wakkanai breakwater used to protect passengers and goods as they disembarked from their train, presumably to catch a ship elsewhere.  The winds here are strong, though today the wind turbine overlooking this small city is just steady rather than dizzying. It carries the scent of seaweed…

  • A Dormy Breakfast

Salted raw squid for breakfast anyone? The answer might be yes if you are Japanese. Fortunately there was plenty of other stuff, including cooked seafood, salad and dessert for this not quite so adventurous gaijin.

  • Mission one complete

It took me a touch under 18 hours but mission north has now been completed. Wakkanai is as far north as you can go on the Japanese rail system. It’s not my longest day of catching trains, that record belongs to my student days between Canberra and Sydney.  Today was far nicer. And what better…

  • North

And that’s it. The northern end of the line. Only late train of the day.

  • North leg 5 – Sarobetsu Express to Wakkanai

The last train for today, from Asahiyama to Wakkanai. We were in Asahikawa in January to visit the Asahiyama Zoo. It was the coldest I’ve ever experienced, almost -13 degrees C. Nothing like that today!

  • North leg 4 – Lilac Express 35 to Asahikawa

Back to a modern train that doesn’t smell like piss every time the vestibule door opens. I was looking for fast food in Sapporo Station but I didn’t spot the Lotteria in the station area until too late. Not that I should eat it anyway.  Not much available to take away, but I did get…

  • Up close

Sometimes it’s better to take it slow.

  • North leg 3 – Limited Express Hokuto to Sapporo

No more Shinkansen. The third train of the day is a lot slower and rattier but at least I’ve got the window.

  • North leg 3 – Ltd Express Hokuto 13 to Sapporo

No more Shinkansens for the day. This train is older and slower but I’ve got the window. Hokkaido isn’t as white as before. It’s summer!
